Creative Programming "News Worthy":

X-Box; by Microsoft:
Finally Microsoft has gotten into the proven to be profitable console gaming biz. With its first console ever the X-box. Microsoft acknowledged the existence of the platform at the Game Developer's Conference (GDC), Bill Gates himself stepped up to unveil the system specs. It was suggested that the X-Box is three times more powerful than Sony's PlayStation 2.

Microsoft stated the console will consist of a 600MHz Intel Pentium III processor with a 300MHz Nvidia graphics chip. There will also be a 64-channel sound chip as well as a DVD player with full movie playback capabilities. The X-box should be able to pump out 300 million polygons per second. As if that weren't enough to make you say wow, the system will have a built in 8 GB hard drive and an Ethernet card for broadband net access.

To power the X-box, Microsoft will use a stripped down version of Windows 2000 OS. In theory this should mean zero boot up time. The X-Box will not be able to to play Windows 98/2000 PC games and is not likely to have its own "killer app" games in the way that Sega has Sonic, Sony has Crash, Nintendo has Mario and the PC has Quake.

Those all this sound familiar? That's because the X-Box's specs are very similar to a current high-end PC. So should we all ditch our PCs, I think not! The system wont be on the market until April 2001 by which time a high-end PC will far surpass the speed and graphical ability of the X-Box specs. Also keep in mind the X-Box will not have a mouse, keyboard or possibly even a joystick. Check back as we update you on the X-Box.
